استاذ فخري في جامعة شيكاغو، لغات وحضارات الشرق الأدنى ،
ولد جون بيري في بريطانيا وتلقى تعليمه في جامعة كامبريدج (كلية بيمبروك)، حيث حصل في عام 1970 على درجة الدكتوراه في الدراسات الشرقية (العربية والفارسية).
وفي عام 1964-65 قضى سنة في ايران لدراسة الفارسية في جامعة طهران.
أجرى أبحاثا في إيران والعراق (بما في ذلك كردستان) وأفغانستان وباكستان والهند وطاجيكستان .
درس في قسم الدراسات العربية في جامعة سانت أندروز، اسكتلندا (1968 - 1972) قبل أن يتوجه إلى شيكاغو. وشمل تدريسه في شيكاغو دورات حول الأدب الشرق أوسطي في الترجمة والحضارة الإسلامية وكذلك اللغة الفارسية (والطاجيكية) والأدب.
ركزت أبحاثه السابقة على تاريخ إيران في القرن الثامن عشر والمناطق المتاخمة. وهو يركز حاليا على تاريخ اللغة الفارسية، ولا سيما آليات إدماج المفردات العربية في الفارسية ونشرها إلى لغات أخرى في المنطقة.
وتشمل الاهتمامات الأخرى الفولكلور الإيراني والثقافة المحلية، واللغة والتاريخ الثقافي لطاجيكستان .
