هو أستاذ مشارك ومدير مركز دراسات الشرق الأوسط في الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة و باحث زائر في مركز الأردن للدراسات المتقدمة في روسيا في جامعة نيويورك، نيويورك. تركز أبحاثه على العلاقات الدولية في الشرق الأوسط (مع التركيز على دول الخليج وخاصة السعودية وإيران) والولايات المتحدة والروسية والمملكة المتحدة والاتحاد الأوروبي والسياسة الخارجية الصينية والإسلام والدولة والدراسات الأمنية والتنمية، بما في ذلك أفغانستان ومصر وتركيا والإمارات العربية المتحدة وأفريقيا جنوب الصحراء الكبرى.
وقد حصل على زمالات مع مركز الدراسات الدولية في كلية العلوم السياسية ومركز الملك فيصل للبحوث والدراسات الإسلامية في الرياض والشخص المتغير لبرنامج الحرب في جامعة أكسفورد. كما كان باحثا زائرا في مركز الدراسات الدولية في سسينس بو في باريس وباحث مع مركز استراتيجيات الأمن المستقبلية في معهد هدسون.
الدكتور ماسون هو مؤلف أو محرر خمسة كتب: إعادة تقييم النظام والاضطراب في الشرق الأوسط: الخلل الإقليمي أو التفكك (2017)، مصر والخليج: تحالف سياسي إقليمي متجدد (2017)، الأقلية المسلمة - علاقات الدولة: العنف، (2016)، السياسة الدولية للربيع العربي: الاضطرابات الشعبية والسياسة الخارجية (2014)، السياسة الخارجية في إيران والمملكة العربية السعودية: الاقتصاد والدبلوماسية في الشرق الأوسط (2014). وقد ظهرت مقالاته في مجموعة من المنشورات، منها: مجلة الشرق الأوسط، وسياسة الشرق الأوسط، ومجلة هارفارد لسياسة الشرق الأوسط وسياساته، وربع العالم الثالث، والمجلة البريطانية لدراسات الشرق الأوسط، والمجلة الألمانية للسياسة والاقتصاد والثقافة في الشرق الأوسط (أورينت)، مجلة دراسات آسيا الوسطى والقوقاز، والمغرب الاستعراض. وقد ظهرت مقالاته في أوبنديموكراسي، والمراقب الوطني، والمراقب العادل، وتيل، وإيران ريفيو، و فايننشال تايمز، و ديبلومات، و روسي نوسفريف، وجريدة جورج تاون للشؤون الدولية. وقد دعمت أبحاثه من قبل الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة، والمعهد البريطاني للدراسات الفارسية، وصاحب السمو الملكي الأمير الوليد آل سعود للمنح الدراسية، ومركز لس الشرق الأوسط .
