منذ عام 2009 اصبح أستاذ الدراسات الدينية في جامعة أمستردام. وقبل ذلك، كان أستاذا للدين المقارن والدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة رادبود نيميغن (2004-2009)، محاضر في دراسة مقارنة للأديان والدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة ليدن (1996-2004)، وزميل باحث في أكاديمية كونينكلييك نيديرلاندز فان ويتنشابن (1991-1996). وهو عضو في العديد من مجالس التحرير، بما في ذلك سلسلة كتاب نومين مع بريل ومجلة الكوانتارا.
ومجال خبرته هو تاريخ الإسلام والعلاقات بين الإسلام والأديان الأخرى، وخاصة في شبه الجزيرة الأيبيرية وشمال أفريقيا وأوروبا.
وهو مهتم أيضا بالقضايا النظرية والمنهجية في دراسة الأديان.
