الخبرة :
التاريخ الحديث للشرق الأوسط؛ والحركات السلفية الإسلامية؛ الدول: العراق ومصر والمملكة العربية السعودية.
محاضر في تاريخ الشرق الأوسط في قسم الدراسات الدينية في جامعة رادبود، نيجميغن، هولندا، ومساعد أول في مركز الأبحاث الهولندي، المعهد الهولندي للعلاقات الدولية، "كلينجنديل". وكتب الدكتوراه في مصر، البحث عن الحداثة: الفكر السياسي الليبرالي العلماني واليساري في مصر، 1945-1958 (روتلدج / كرزون، 2002)،
وحرر سبعة مجلدات، منها الكونية، الهوية والأصالة في الشرق الأوسط (كرزون، 1999)، الاغتراب أو دمج الشباب العربي: بين الأسرة والدولة والشارع (كرزون، 2000)،
السلفية العالمية: الحركة الدينية الإسلامية الجديدة ويعمل حاليا على مشروع بحثي عن السلفية بتمويل من المنظمة الهولندية للبحث العلمي (نو) (هورست / كولومبيا أوب، 2009)، (ترجم إلى العربية والصينية)
ومؤخرا جماعة الإخوان المسلمين في أوروبا (هورست / كولومبيا أوب، 2012).
وقد نشر على نطاق واسع حول الحركات الاجتماعية، والحركة الإسلامية، والوضع السياسي في مصر والسعودية والعراق والبحرين. وفي الوقت الحالي، يقوم حاليا بتحرير كتاب نيلز بوتنشون بعنوان "المواطنة في الشرق الأوسط: التاريخ والنظرية والممارسة" (بريل في عام 2015)، ومنسق اتحاد H2020 "المواطنة والنضال بشأن النظام السياسي في الجنوب والشرق بلدان البحر الأبيض المتوسط".
وهو باحث مستقل درس التاريخ في جامعة أمستردام، وفي عام 1995 حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في الجامعة نفسها لأبحاثه عن المثقفين وناصر، السعي من أجل الحداثة: العلمانية الليبرالية واليسارية والفكر السياسي في مصر، 1945-1958.
