استاذ فخري في مجلس البحوث البريطانية في المشرق، معهد كينيون،
عمل لأول مرة كصحفي في القاهرة في عام 1992 ثم انضم إلى الخدمة العربية بي بي سي. في الفترة من 2001 إلى 2004، عمل لدى إكونوميست و فايننشال تايمز في العراق والأردن. وهو مؤلف كتاب : النظام الإسلامي الجديد : العراق وإحياء الإسلام الشيعي (2008).
ومؤلف مشارك مع بيتر مانسفيلد , تاريخ الشرق الأوسط (2010).
